Visit of Ambassador M. Stašek in West Bengal

On the invitation of the Prime Minister of West Bengal Ambassador Miloslav Stašek visited Kolkata between January 6 and 8, 2015, where he participated as one of the main guests at “Bengal Global Business Summit”. On the sidelines of the summit H.E Miloslav Stašek met with the Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee and A. Mitra, Minister of Trade and Mining of the Government of West Bengal. Their debate was focused on the possibilities of economic cooperation in the field of civil aviation, energy and supplies technologies for coal mining. At the end of the visit Ambassador M. Stašek inaugurated a concert performance of a Czech pianist Mrs. Jana Chaudhuri at the Calcutta School of Music. After the concert H.E. M. Stašek discussed the arrangements for the upcoming tour of South Bohemian Philharmonic Orchestra in India with Debashish Chaudhuri, Indian conductor operating in the Czech Republic and chief conductor of the South Bohemian Philharmonic Orchestra.

In Kolkata, Ambassador M. Stašek together with the ambassadors of South Korea, China, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Luxembourg, Israel and Belarus participated as a chief guest at “Bengal Global Business Summit”. West Bengal is another state that is trying to use the euphoria induced by the central government and that is currently seeking to change the economic environment in the Union state and improve the image of India abroad in order to attract foreign investors to India, which would create new jobs, improve basic infrastructure and attract new technologies that could help boost domestic production.

“Bengal Global Business Summit” confirmed that West Bengal is beginning to open up to foreign investors who are keen to offer a number of exciting trade opportunities in energy, tourism, agriculture and food industry sector and furthermore in mining industry, textile, medical and heavy industry or infrastructure. GDP of West Bengal grew 8.2% in 2014, which is nearly 30% more than the growth of GDP of the entire India. With a population exceeding 93 mil and one of the cheapest manpower in India, there is number of investment opportunities for foreign investors and for relatively cheaper production than in other Union states.

The best opportunities for the Czech Republic can be identified in the mining industry (12 Czech companies are already in various stages of negotiations for supply of technology to the state company Coal India which controls 75% of India licenses for coal mining), civil aviation (company LET Kunovice talking about delivery of L 410 aircraft for the Federal Government, and Pinnacle Air Ltd, and Transcon is currently negotiating construction of airports in remote areas of the state), followed by energy (Doosan Skoda Power and Vitkovice are active in the field of thermal power plants and solar power plants), water management and food industry.

At the end of the Summit and in the presence of H.E. Miloslav Stašek the Prime Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee announced as one of the major outcomes of the Summit the signing of an agreement between the state of West Bengal and Pinnacle Air Ltd. to jointly operate an airline Pan West Bengal which will operate so called "fixed wing aircraft service". The agreement is based on the delivery of the Czech aircraft L 410 that are supposed to provide air connection with North-East states of the Indian Federation.

Pinnacle Air Ltd. has been negotiating with LET Kunovice the financial terms of the delivery of the aircraft lately. Delivery of L 410 would signify a breakthrough in this area of industry and possible supplies for other Federal States.

Furthermore, West Bengal has one of the largest seaports in India but it is necessary to modernize it and build suitable infrastructure, which would turn West Bengal into major transportation hub of the North-East India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The influx of foreign investment into infrastructure and production was not only the main motto of the Summit but it is an essential condition for stronger economic growth in West Bengal.
