Ambassador presented credentials in Maldives

Milan Hovorka presented his letter of credence to the President of the Republic of Maldives, Hon. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, appointing him by the President of the Czech Republic, Hon. Milos Zeman, as the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Republic of Maldives.
 

Following the ceremony held at the President's Office in Male on 9th March 2016, the President and the Ambassador met to discuss the current stage of mutual relations between the two countries and further perspectives of their strengthening and deepening.

While thanking the President for congratulating him on the commencement of his term, Ambassador Hovorka stated that he felt honoured to represent the Czech Republic in the Maldives and committed himself to do his best to take the bilateral partnership to a higher level.

In this respect, the Ambassador mentioned people-to-people contacts, enhanced economic cooperation, environment, cultural exchanges and political dialogue to further the fundamental values of democracy and human rights. He also expressed the readiness of the Czech Republic to work with the Maldives on the international forums and congratulated the authorities on their positive role, also as the leader of the Association of Small Island States, at the recently concluded COP21 Conference in Paris. He assured the President that he was fully aware how vulnerable countries like Maldives are to the consequences of climate changes.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Hon. Dunya Maumoon, on whom the Ambassador called afterwards to elaborate jointly on some of the ideas arising from the exchanges with the President.

Later in the day, Ambassador Hovorka called on the Minister of Finace and Treasury of the Republic of Maldives, Hon. Abdulla Jihad, to explore the possibilities of more intensive economic ties between the two countries.
