New Ambassador of Sri Lanka for the Czech Republic

On 23 August 2016, the President of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman at the Prague Castle forwarded credentials in the hands of  their new Ambassador of Sri Lanka for the Czech Republic Mrs Priyanee Wijesekera, based in Vienna, Austria.


 


After the award ceremony of credentials took place in Brožíkově drawing-room of Prague Castle, the negotiations with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Director of the Protocol Office of the President, Henry Forejta, Director of the Asia and the Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Mark Libřického, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Office of the President of the Republic and the representative of the Director of the diplomatic protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

President Milos Zeman during the adoption of the asked for the handover of cordial greetings to the President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Maithripalovi Sirisenovi and expressed the hope that it will be able to take place in 2017, a visit to Sri Lanka, to which it will be accompanied by a large group of businessmen to promote economic diplomacy.

Mrs Priyanee Wijesekera Ambassador expressed thanks and many thanks for all the assistance that the Czech Republic has not yet provided by Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka still covers the Czech Republic from his Embassy in Vienna.  The Embassy of Sri Lanka, diplomatic covers not only the resident nerezidentně, but also Austria Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Serbia. The Ambassador is also the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka at international organisations based in Vienna, including the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Organization of the Treaty for a general prohibition of nuclear tests (CTBT), the United Nations Office on drugs and crime (UNODC) and other.  President Milos Zeman expressed the view in this connection that Sri Lanka should open a separate Embassy in Prague, in particular due to the fact that among the Czech tourists, there is great interest in visiting Sri Lanka.

Director of the countries in Asia and the Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic stated that Sri Lanka is not currently in Prague or honorary consul and requested that the Sri Lankan side has taken the steps necessary to his appointment.

President Milos Zeman assured the Ambassador that the Czech Republic supports the European Union has supported MFN GSP plus for Sri Lanka. In another interview, inter alia, indicate interest in support of mutual relations between the Czech Republic and Sri Lanka also in the cultural field and in the areas of Buddhist studies.
