Working Visit of the Ambassador M. Hovorka to the Maldives

On October 6 and 7, 2021, Ambassador of the Czech Republic Milan Hovorka made a working visit to the capital of the Republic of Maldives Malé with the aim of opening the historically first Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in the Maldives and also saying goodbye to their representatives with regard to the imminent end of his diplomatic mission. The Ambassador, accompanied by Nicole Machová, Head of the Consular Section of the Czech Embassy in New Delhi, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid, and the Minister of Tourism Abdulla Maussom. At the invitation of Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, he attended a gala dinner on the occasion of the Maldives National Day, during which important Maldivian personalities were awarded for their contribution to the country's development. 

Recently appointed Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in the Maldives Mr Madeeh Jamal started fully his consular duties immediately after the grand opening of the Honorary Consulate on October 7, 2021, which was attended by the Maldivian Foreign Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed and the Joint Secretary of Europe, Americas and Oceania Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mrs Shiuneen Rasheed.

 

In his speech, Ambassador Milan Hovorka emphasized the time aspect of the opening of the Honorary Consulate, which takes place on the same day when the Maldives celebrate their national holiday. He underlined the high dynamics of bilateral relations. Opening of the Consulate was presented as a proof of the Czech Republic's commitment to their further development. He wished the newly appointed Honorary Consul all the best. He expressed the belief that Czech citizens living in the Maldives will have great support, especially in the time of need. However, he expects the Honorary Consul to be reasonably active also in seeking opportunities to develop bilateral economic and cultural cooperation. 

 

The positive development of the Czech-Maldivian relations was also appreciated by Foreign Secretary A. Mohamed, who in his speech assured Ambassador M. Hovorka that the Maldivian authorities would provide the Honorary Consulate all cooperation for the performance of its function. He congratulated the Czech side on the appointment of Mr Madeeh Jamal as the first Honorary Consul because he enjoys general respect and is one of the most successful Maldivian businessmen.

 

On October 6, 2021, Ambassador Hovorka was honored to be received by the Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdul Shahid. The significance of the moment is reinforced by the fact that the meeting took place on the very first day when the Minister just returned to his homeland from New York, because he is at the same time President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

 

Ambassador congratulated the Minister for all his activities a performance. He reminded that the Czech Republic was one of the countries that supported the candidacy of the Maldives and his personal position for the prestigious position of President of the UN General Assembly. He assured the Minister that he understood the motto #PresidencyofHope, which also reflects very well the mentality of the Maldivian people. 

 

Minister Shahid responded by expressing gratitude for the support of the Czech Republic and assuring him that he would do his best not to disappoint the trust placed in him by the international community.

 

Ambassador Hovorka informed the Minister about the opening of the Honorary Consulate. He thanked the Minister for his personal involvement in the matter and recalled that the Czech Republic accepted his recommendation to appoint Mr. Madeeh Jamal as Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic.

 

Milan Hovorka confirmed that his diplomatic mission is coming to an end. He personally thanked the Minister, the Ministry under his control, and also all the Maldivian authorities with which he had cooperated for all the support he had received during his term in the office.

 

The Minister highly appreciated Ambassador’s personal efforts and emphasized that during his term in office, Czech-Maldivian relations had reached a qualitatively higher level. The Minister wished the Ambassador much success in his professional and personal life and expressed the hope that he would continue to have the opportunity to positively influence bilateral relations in the future.

 

Negotiations with Maldivian Minister of Tourism Abdulla Maussom were focused primarily on his portfolio, for which he is responsible. In the beginning, Ambassador thanked the Minister for all the help that Czech tourists received in connection with last year's evacuations and this year's cases of infection. The Minister appreciated these words. 

 

Minister A. Maussom during his conversation with the Ambassador thanked the Czech citizens for their trust in the local authorities that they could handle the pandemic, by coming in such large numbers. The Czechia currently ranks 12th in terms of the number of foreign tourists in the Maldives.

 

Milan Hovorka responded that in the spring of this year, the Czechia was even the 7th largest market for the Maldives. The number of Czech tourists will increase again with the ongoing autumn and approaching winter.

 

Milan Hovorka also mentioned that the updated list of countries whose certificates of vaccination with one of the vaccines approved by the European Medical Agency or the World Health Organization are recognized by the Czech Republic also include the Maldives from  October 11th, 2021.

 

In the end, the Ambassador informed the Minister about the imminent end of his diplomatic mission, while the subsequent course of courtesy exchanges had a similar course as during the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
