How to Apply for a Short-Term (Schengen) Visa up to 90 Days

If you wish to apply for a short-term (Schengen) visa up to 90 days, you need to book an appointment in advance.

What is the Processing Time

Schengen visa applications can be submitted six months at the earliest and 15 days at the latest ahead of the trip. Issuing a short-term (Schengen) visa takes normally up to 15 calendar days. This period may be extended up to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is needed. It is strongly recommended to apply at least 3 weeks prior the planned departure.

Who can Apply for a Short-Term (Schengen) Visa up to 90 Days

Citizens or residents in  the following countries can apply for a short-term (Schengen) visa up to 90 days: India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Where to Apply for a Short-Term (Schengen) Visa up to 90 Days

The place where to apply for a short-term (Schengen) visa up to 90 days depends on the country of residence of the applicant:

Applicants legally residing in India, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan shall apply at any VFS Global visa application center (Click here for a list of the VFS Global Centers and for booking an appointment). In particular cases (e.g. service passport holders, family members of EU citizens), the application can be lodged directly at the Consular Section of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in New Delhi based on the previous appointment only.

Applicants legally residing in Sri Lanka shall apply at the French Embassy in Colombo respectively based on the previous appointment only.

Applicants legally residing in Bangladesh apply for short term visa at the visa application centre in New Delhi and they can do so every Monday between 10 a.m. to 6  p.m. local Indian time and until the capacity is reached (3 applications per week, out of these 1 with the purpose of short employment).  The legal residents of Bangladesh can also contact the French embassy in Dhaka for submitting their short-term Schengen (Czech) visa application.

How to Apply for a Short-Term (Schengen) Visa up to 90 Days

  1. Make sure about the Visa type you need. A list of the possible Visa types is provided in the Common Information Sheet for Schengen Visa Applicants in India.
  2. Download the Application Form, duly fill and sign it. Click here for the Application Form in English.
  3. Prepare the following items:
    • Valid passport that should: 
      • Have been issued within the last 10 years
      • Be of validity exceeding by three months after the scheduled return
      • Include at least two empty pages
    • Two recent (not older than six months) passport-size photos in color with white background and face of the applicant must cover at least 80% of the frame, according to the specifications laid down by ICAO.
    • Proof of means of transport: Flight reservation of return or round ticket. If the applicant is travelling to several Schengen States, proof of intra-Schengen flight reservation, train itinerary or car rental.
    • Proof of lodging: hotel reservations, rental of holiday home or campus residence reservation. If the applicant intends to stay with a family member or a friend, proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation from the host. Individual Schengen States may require applicant to present proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation by completing a form drawn up by the Schengen State’s competent authority (hereinafter 'national form'). If applicant is travelling to several Schengen States, proof of lodging in each of them.
    • Cover Letter signed by the applicant explaining the purpose of visit to the Czech Republic and entire travel plan (itinerary).
    • Travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen States. Click here for more information about the travel medical insurance.
    • Clear photocopy of first and last page of the passport and at least two Schengen visas, if applicable.
    • Previous passport, if applicable.
    • The required Supporting Documents. The required Supporting Documents depend on many factors (e.g. the requested type of Visa, the marital status of the applicant, the employment status of the applicant etc.). Supporting documents according to purpose of travel:

  4. Submit the application. When submitting the application, the visa fee must be payed. The application can be submitted:
    • At any VFS Global Center: schedule an appointment with the nearest VFS Global Center.
    • At the Consular Section: contact the Consular Section to schedule an appointment.

Your a short-term (Schengen) visa up to 90 days application will be processed in the shortest possible time. If further information is required, you may be contacted by the Consular Section for providing additional documentation or for a personal interview.

The following data must be indicated:

  • The name of the tour operator
  • The sponsoring company (for incentive trips)
  • The number of travelers
  • The travel dates

Kindly note that the processing time for applications belonging to groups may be extended up to 45 days.
