This section explains how to apply for a short-term visa (Schengen Visa). 

What is the Processing Time

Issuing a short-term visa takes normally up to 15 calendar days. This period may be extended up to a maximum of 30 calendar days in individual cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is needed. Exceptionally, when additional documentation is needed in specific cases, the period may be extended up to a maximum of 60 calendar days. It is strongly recommended to apply at least 3 weeks prior the planned departure.

Who can Apply for a Short-Term Visa

Citizens or residents in  the following countries can apply for short-term visa: India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Where to Apply for a Short-Term Visa

The place where to apply for a short-term visa depends on the country of residence of the applicant:

  • Applicants legally residing in India shall apply at any VFS Global Center (Click here for a list of the VFS Global Centers). In particular cases (e.g. holders of diplomatic or service passports) the application can be lodged directly at the Consular Section of the Embassy in New Delhi.
  • Applicants legally residing in Bhutan, Maldives, and Nepal  can only apply directly at the Embassy of The Czech Republic in New Delhi.
  • Applicants legally residing in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka may apply at the French Embassies in Dhaka and Colombo respectively.

How to Apply for a Short-Term Visa

  1. Make sure about the Visa type you need. A list of the possible Visa types is provided in the Common Information Sheet for Schengen Visa Applicants in India.
  2. Download the Application Form, duly fill and sign it. Click here to download the Application Form in .doc format.
  3. Prepare the following items:
    • Valid passport that should: 
      • Have been issued within the last 10 years
      • Be of validity exceeding by three months after the scheduled return
      • Include at least two empty pages
    • Two recent (not older than six months) passport-size photos in color with white background and face of the applicant must cover at least 80% of the frame, according to the specifications laid down by ICAO.
    • Proof of means of transport: Flight reservation of return or round ticket. If the applicant is travelling to several Schengen States, proof of intra-Schengen flight reservation, train itinerary or car rental.
    • Proof of lodging: hotel reservations, rental of holiday home or campus residence reservation. If the applicant intends to stay with a family member or a friend, proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation from the host. Individual Schengen States may require applicant to present proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation by completing a form drawn up by the Schengen State’s competent authority (hereinafter 'national form'). If applicant is travelling to several Schengen States, proof of lodging in each of them.
    • Cover Letter signed by the applicant explaining the purpose of visit to the Czech Republic and entire travel plan (itinerary).
    • Travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen States.Click here for more information about the travel medical insurance.
    • Clear photocopy of first and last page of the passport and at least two Schengen visas, if applicable.
    • Previous passport, if applicable.
    • The required Supporting Documentation. The required Supporting Documentation depends on many factors (e.g. the requested type of Visa, the marital status of the applicant, the employment status of the applicant etc.). Click here for a detailed list of the required documents.
  4. Submit the application. When submitting the application, the relative fee must be payed. The application can be submitted:
    • At any VFS Global Center: schedule an appointment with the nearest VFS Global Center.
    • At the Consular & Visa Section of the Embassy: contact the Consular & Visa Section to schedule an appointment.

Your short-term visa application will be processed in the shortest possible time. If further information is required, you may be contacted by the Consular & Visa Section for providing additional documentation or for a personal interview.

Travel agents or representatives wishing to submit 20 or more applications must contact VFS  for an appointment by writing an e-mail to the address info.CzechIndia@vfshelpline.com or by calling the number (+91)-022-67866023.

The following data must be indicated:

  • The name of the tour operator
  • The sponsoring company (for incentive trips)
  • The number of travelers
  • The travel dates

Kindly note that the processing time for applications belonging to groups may be extended up to 30 days.
