Czech Folk Songs in India

On the occasion of the 80th death anniversary of the great philosopher and first President of the then Czechoslovakia Thomas Garrigue Masaryk and 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations with India the Embassy of the Czech Republic organized a cultural event called "Singing for Masaryk" on April 6th, 2017.

On the invitation for the event there was a portrait of President Masaryk made by famous painter of the Czech origin Oskar Kokoschka in 1935-1936.

Czech dramaturg and composer Daniel Dobias presented a musical story about a symbolic meeting of two great personalities Rabindranath Tagore and Thomas Garrigue Masaryk who both were nominated for the Nobel Prize and lived at the same time and who had similar ideas about independence of their country which finally came true.

He was accompanied by singers and musicians, members of the Czech choir SBORCZECH from the Louny Art School with choirmaster Eva Kleinova and director Sarka Riedlova.

Ambassador Milan Hovorka in opening remarks pointed out that the Czech Embassy in New Delhi is trying to bring the Czech culture to India.

Following the January's introduction of the Czech puppetry by Mr Pavel Vangeli and the recent piano recital of Mrs Jana Chaudhury the Czech Embassy this time invited SBORCZECH from the town of Louny about 60 kilometers from Prague which presented many Czech folk songs.

Young Czech singers and musicians worthily represented not only Art School in Louny, but also the local high school called Gymnasium of which many of them are students.

Most of them traveled to India for the first time in their life, so they visited not only Delhi but also Agra and Jaipur.

Their Indian tour culminated on Friday, April 7, 2017 when they were performing at INDIA EMPIRE Diplomatic Night in hotel Metropolitan in New Delhi.

SBORCZECH sang not only in Czech but also in English and Hindi.

INDIA EMPIRE AWARD was given to the best diplomatic missions for their contribution in strengthening diplomatic relations between the countries.

Indian Minister of Steel Honorable Chaudhury Birendra Singh handed over the Crystal Globe to the Czech Ambassador Milan Hovorka.

The Czech musicians arranged the cultural part of the event for which they received a Certificate of Appreciation.

Most spontaneous was the meeting of SBORCZECH with the famous Indian jazz band Bollyjazz-Bollybilly, namely guitarist and singer Nikhil Mawkin, flutist Nathali Ramirez, guitarist Pranai Gurung, bassist Harshit Misra and drummer Nikhila Vasudevan in famous Delhi jazz club "The Piano Man" on Saturday April 8, 2017. Their concert was completely sold out.

Members of SBORCZECH had not only a unique opportunity to get acquainted with this band, but were given also the opportunity to perform in this jazz club.

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in New Delhi thanks to the musical dramaturg and composer Mr. Daniel Dobias, to the director of the Art School in Louny Jindriska Riedlova, to the choirmaster Eva Kleinova and to all the members of the choir SBORCZECH for their presentation of the Czech folk culture in India.
