The award serves as an acknowledgement of Steen’s contribution to the protection of democratic values, freedom of speech, human rights, and international cooperation. Steen is also known as a keen promoter of the Czech Republic abroad.

Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs awarded the Norwegian writer Thorvald Steen with Gratias Agit prize

Thorvald Steen is a novelist, poet, playwright, and essayist. In his works, he gives a voice to the weak of our society, as well as to religious and ideological minorities.

Steen’s historical and autobiographical novels have been translated into 26 languages, and three of them, The Weight of Snow Crystals, Camel Clouds, and The White Bathhouse have been translated also into Czech.
