The Czech Republic has joined the Declaration Against Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations, prepared by Canada.
The arbitrary detention of foreign nationals to obtain leverage in state-to-state relations is clearly a violation of international law.
Unfortunately, this practice continues. The MFA regards this initiative as both relevant and useful. The Czech citizens were arbitrarily detained by other states with aim to put political pressure on our government. Therefore, the MFA sees this declaration as important message of States respecting the international law, that this practice is illegal and unacceptable whereas on the word is occurred.
