Czech participation in the Cambodia´s Tree Planting Day

All-Cambodia Tree Planting Day took place in Battambang province. H. M. King Norodom Sihamoni, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of local authorities participated and highlighted the importance of forests and their protection.

On July 9, Ambassador Martin Vávra participated in the so-called Tree Planting Day in the village of Sambour Meas in Battambang province, where 13,100 trees were planted on 10 hectares. This is an annual all-Cambodia event, but it has not been held for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The importance of the event is evidenced by the high representation of the Cambodian party led by the head of state H. M. King Norodom Sihamoni.

In his speech, His Majesty first praised the approach of the Prime Minister, which managed the Covid-19 pandemic and thus made it possible again to hold social events, including this one. The praise was accompanied by a call to residents to observe hygienic and sanitary measures corresponding to life in the new normal conditions.

After that, His Majesty addressed the event itself and highlighted the importance of forests for ensuring food security, increasing living standards, creating jobs and reducing poverty, improving nutrition levels, preserving economic growth, natural resources, providing energy security and preventing climate change. Deforestation can cause floods, storms or, conversely, drought, which can lead to animal decline, desertification and land degradation. His Majesty called for the planting of trees wherever possible, as this is how the mentioned negative phenomena can be prevented. Illegal deforestation and poaching must also be fought. Every commune in the country must take care of the agricultural diversity that will correspond to the potential of the soil there.

The event ended with the symbolic planting of their "own" trees by members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of local authorities.
