Children in Romeas Haek got new school and community preschool

(This article expired 31.10.2021.)

Children living in a Cambodian village called Ampel, located just few kilometres from Vietnam border in Romeas Haek district of Svay Rieng province, can now attend classes in newly built community preschool, school and playground constructed with the support from the small local project funding of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

New school was built just few metres from the original dilapidated wooden school building – so far the only place for primary school children from the village to be taught by teachers. Through the time, the wooden building became very dangerous, especially due to its bad stability during heavy rains and storms. However, thanks to the funds provided by the Czech Republic, the local non-governmental organisation Star Kampuchea, managed to build a new building on time. Since September, children can learn in the new and safe village school.

However, project also targeted preschool children and their schooling. So far, small children from Ampel village were educated household by household by the efforts of community preschool teacher only. Therefore, the Czech Republic funded the construction of a community preschool building located next to the new primary school and children playground. Within the school area, there is a “diversity garden” with plants and trees to provide a better environment for children and to educate them in recognising different plant species.

Thanks to the newly built school, two of my children can now attend classes in our village. Before, children went to the old wooden building that could collapse anytime. It was dangerous, but there was no other way for locals. That is why, both of my older children commuted every day to the school in neighbouring village. The school building over there is in the better condition, but it is far and we were worried about them. Now, they can learn in the new safe school building, close to our house and in the centre of our village. My youngest daughter is now starting her preschool education. Before, children were educated by the community teacher independently house by house. Now, they have a safe classroom and can play at the playground altogether”, say Mr. Chea Chamnab from Ampel village.

This project was funded by the official development cooperation program of the Czech Republic.
