Opening ceremony of teaching biomedical engineering in Cambodia

(This article expired 31.12.2020.)

On February 20, 2020, a ceremony was held to commence practical training in biomedical engineering in Cambodia. The teaching of this university course is prepared in cooperation with  experts from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague. Cambodia's partner institutions ensuring the education in this field are the University of Health Sciences and the Cambodian Institute of Technology.

The public health system in Cambodia is undergoing dynamic development. This technically and financially demanding segment is broadly supported by foreign partners. However, the quality of health care provided is limited by the ability of Cambodian health facilities to ensure effective operation, systematic maintenance and repair of equipment. The new university branch of biomedical engineering aims to provide Cambodian healthcare with enough specialists to ensure the operation and repair of equipment in healthcare facilities and to contribute significantly to improving the quality of healthcare.

Through a project implemented by the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, Cambodian partners will acquire the necessary pedagogical and technical components for the sustainable teaching of the new field. In addition to curriculum tailored to Cambodian content, the project focuses on practical laboratory training, in which students should become familiar with the application of theoretical principles in practice and work with real medical devices used in hospitals. They will thus have the opportunity to learn how to operate and use the equipment while maintaining, repairing, testing and performing safety checks on medical installations.

“The demands on graduates in bioengineering will not be limited to using a screwdriver, hammer or pliers. However, they should master the principles of functioning of key medical devices and their energy support, cope with easier repairs or outages and know how to proceed in complicated and unexpected situations” said a representative of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Phnom Penh.

The project envisages intensive communication between expert teams from the Czech Republic and Cambodia, including practical training of Cambodian experts - future biomedical teachers - in the Czech Republic and Czech teachers in Cambodia. The plan also includes supplies of technical equipment for partner Cambodian universities.

The project is financed by the Czech Development Agency as part of the official development assistance of the Czech Republic to Cambodia.
