Standards of sanitation at schools improved due to the support from the Czech Republic

(This article expired 30.11.2019 / 13:26.)

In 2018 the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Phnom Penh supported a local project called “Girl Friendly Schools: improving sanitation, hygiene and health education in Cambodia”. Project targeted the improvement of sanitation for 2 415 students at 12 schools in Kampot and Sihanoukville provinces and was implemented by a non-governmental organization Helpcode.

An important part of the project focused on awareness in WASH and health at schools and neighbouring communities with a special emphasis on needs of girls. Moreover, where necessary, project ensured rehabilitation of broken toilets and constructed new ones. Thanks to these activities, targeted schools now meet sanitation standards required by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of Cambodia. As a remarkable result of the project, there is a decrease in absence of students, especially among girls, who before felt intimidated to attend classes due to bad sanitation conditions.

The project was funded as a part of the official development cooperation of the Czech Republic.
