Humanitarian project in Cambodia, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and implemented by People in Need, aims to build an Early Warning System aimed to flood-risk protection. An international conference on the use of this system was held in Phnom Penh on 3-4 December 2019.

The International Conference with the participation of experts from countries around the Mekong River discussed the study elaborated on the circumstances of the use of the Early Warning System (EWS) against sudden flooding in Cambodia.

The system, developed by PIN since 2013 as part of a humanitarian program aimed at strengthening Cambodia's resilience to risks of natural threat, currently covers 21 out of 25 Cambodia provinces. Almost 100,000 subscribers are currently using water-level monitoring with automatic warning via mobile phones. The data provided by the system is also used by the Mekong River Commission and the National Committee for Disaster Management of Cambodia. PIN has been working with UNDP, SDC and the US Embassy in Phnom Penh to prepare this study and to further develop the EWS in Cambodia.
