A new Water Treatment Plant in Ou Rei Commune, Steung Treng province built with the support of the Czech Embassy in Phnompenh

The aim of a small local project funded by the Czech Embassy in Phnom Penh and implemented by a local non-government organization Lien AID was to provide drinking water for people living along the Mekong River in Ou Rei Commune.

Although the local people may not seem to have a problem with water supply, the opposite is true. Water in the river doesn´t meet standarts for drinking water and thus people suffer from various illnesses. The most vulnerable are young children.

Due to the project implemented by the Lien AID and very close cooperation with local government, a new Water Treatment Plant was built at the bank of the river. As a keeper of the Water Treatment Plant was appointed a local enterpreneur, who is now responsible for the production and subsequent distribution of treated water packed in 20l barrels to adjacent villages. Distribution is also ensured by small grocery shops where a 20l barrel with drinking water is sold for a very affordable price comparable with other local products. People may also purchase water for reduced price directly at the Plant.

One 20l barrel provides the family with drinking water for several days. Currently, we can see a decrease in the incidence of the diseases, local people trust the water from the Water Treatment Plant and are willing to buy it.

The project is implemented within the framework of the Official Development Assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic with Cambodia.
