Embassy of the Czech Republic supported exhibition „Between Democracies 1989-2014: Memory and Commemoration“

From 3 to 30 September 2015 the exhibition "Between Democracies" will take place at the Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. Nearly 53 artists from Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe as well as South Africa will exhibit their work.

The exhibition should point out the parallels with totalitarian regimes, which both regions before 1989 have passed, and the subsequent development of the two democracies in the period 1989-2014. At the beginning of the next year the exhibition will move to Bratislava to Kunsthalle.

Four artists from the Czech Republic will participate in the exhibition: Adéla Babanová, Zbyněk Baladrán, Lukáš Houdek and Kateřina Šedá.

Photographer Lukáš Houdek will take part in the opening of the exhibition. He was born in 1984, he studied at the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University. He began photography in 2005, when he attempted to catch the life of Czech gypsies. Since 2010 he has been focusing on artistic photography. For these projects he uses archives materials as well as his own inspirations.

The exhibition is curated by Judy Peter and Richard Gregor.
