Exhibition "Lidice Tragedy" and screening of the movie"Lidice"

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the burning of Lidice, the Embassy of the Czech Republic, in cooperation with the Holocaust and Genocide Center in Johannesburg held the opening of the exhibition "Lidice Tragedy" and the screening of the movie.

This event was also a celebration of the first "Czech Day" which will take place every year at the Holocaust and Genocide Centre in Johannesburg.

The event was opened by Tali Nates, the Director of the Centre, followed with a speech by the Czech Ambassador to South Africa, Michal Král. The event was attended by guests from the diplomatic community, the Jewish community as well as from the expatriates (about 80 visitors). Among the visitors there were also some Holocaust survivors and the Bublík family who had some personal ties to Lidice. Mr. Josef Bublík had worked with the parachutists and died with them in the church crypt of St. Cyril and Methodius after the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The opening of the exhibition was followed by the screening of a moving story - Lidice (2011, directed by Petr Nikolaev).

The Czech Embassy in Pretoria has been working closely with the Holocaust and Genocide Center in Johannesburg for a long time. A glass sculpture is currently being created especially for the center, is now being finalized by glassmaker Mr. Petr Larva.
