(This article expired 25.11.2021.)

On a chilly morning of the 31st October 2018, in the pristine environment of one of the most luxurious golf resorts in Gauteng, Steyn City Golf Club in Johannesburg, ambassadors, diplomats, government officials, company executives and other distinguished guests of the Czech Embassy gathered together to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Czech Independence by participating in a charity golf tournament. Besides the dignified commemoration of the centenary of the foundation of the Republic, the event served to promote the major sponsors, the Czech companies such as Redo s.r.o., Česká zbrojovka a.s., Era a.s. and Tatra Trucks a.s. and Absa Group Ltd as the local SA partner.

Heads of several diplomatic Missions in Pretoria including ambassadors of Vietnam, Taiwan, Singapore and Panama, diplomats, Defence and Air Force Attaches, representatives of the Department of Trade and Industry, entrepreneurs, business partners and Czech Expats, a total of 84 players completed the starting field. The participants enjoyed their round of golf at the well maintained course of Steyn City Golf Club as well as the wide variety of gifts and prizes, including a specially designed golf t-shirt in Czech national colors. A charity raffle was part of the event of which the proceeds were donated to the charity organization AESA. A wine tasting was offered by a local wine producer BAYEDE! Wines Pty Ltd. Scottish Whiskey tasting was provided by a local Glenfiddich distributor. AB InBev donated two kegs of Castle Lite beer.

General sponsors supported the event such as Czech companies Redo s.r.o. (army and medical equipment producer), Česká zbrojovka a.s. (small arms manufacturer, locally known as CZUB), Tatra Trucks a.s. (heavy off-road truck manufacturer) and ERA a.s. (surveillance and navigation systems producers). Absa Group Ltd was main partner on South African side. Other sponsors were Safintra South Africa Pty Ltd, Curvent International Ltd, Fasteners Direct Pty Ltd, Kare Industrial Suppliers (Pty) Ltd and Powerdek Cc. Mercedes-Benz Centurion exhibited their latest models at the venue. Prizes for the raffle were donated by Ambassador Duty Free as well as individual contributors such as Mr. V. Janda from JISR Institute a.s. and staff of the Czech Embassy to all whom we thank.

The result of the sporting tournament was not of importance, although the performances of most of players were excellent. What was significant was the proud message of Czech companies to their South African partners allowing organization of an excellent Golf Day of such symbolic importance in one of the most luxurious South African golf resorts. The evening program, including award ceremony and charity raffle, was elegantly accompanied by moderator Mr. Shaheen Hoosen. The South African NGO AESA was given an amount of approximately CZK 15.000,-. The Embassy of the Czech Republic thanks the local partners and honourable guests who supported the event and also the Steyn City Golf Club staff.
