A new Early Learning Centre in the east of Pretoria aimed at supporting children from the nearby rural and informal shack settlements, will be officially handed over by the Czech Ambassador, Mr Michal Kral, to the Kungwini Welfare Organisation (KWO) on 26 January at 10:00 at Plot214 Graham Road, (Lynnwood Road Extension), Zwavelpoort. The location was identified by Pretoria Sunrise Rotary, in collaboration with KWO, as ideal for the support of education, and combating malnutrition among young children from the informal settlements within a 10km radius. The project was to ensure that the most vulnerable children between the ages of 2 and 6 years would benefit. The plan is to commence with 43 children, and over a period of time, KWO, with the assistance of other partners, will grow the size of the centre in order to accommodate up to 100 children. This will have a very positive effect within the area, where previously there were no adequate facilities.

The temporary structures are 2 X 12 metre converted containers with windows and electric light, and cooling on a concrete base. In addition, a further two 2 X 6 metre converted containers have been installed, one as an office / storeroom, and the other is to be converted into toilets to be connected to a septic tank sanitation system. A carport play area under shade has been provided. A water tank and stand has been purchased, and water from the KWO Borehole will be pumped into this tank for the use of the ELC. The KWO received donations and used some of its own funds for the educational materials, fencing, concrete slabs and lighting.  The KWO completed the project and installed the toilets, grass, garden play equipment, parking area and signage.

The total value of the project was as follows:

·         The Czech Development Agency contributed R 241,000

·         The KWO through its donors contributed R 279,000 to the project – fencing of the property, slab for the containers, grass, refurbished playground equipment, furniture, and education equipment

·         Pretoria Sunrise Rotary Club contributed approximately R 10,000 in goods and donations.

·         Total value of the project: R 530,000.00

The Embassy of the Czech Republic would like to especially acknowledge Mr Perry Garlick who coordinated the whole project from the beginning till the end. Congratulations, Mr Perry!
