Do you need a Schengen visa to travel to Schengen?

Citizens of South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Lesotho and Swaziland need a Schengen visa for short-term visits to the Schengen area.

Nationals of other countries (resident in RSA or in other above mentioned countries):

There is a common list of countries whose citizens must have a visa when entering the Schengen area and those whose citizens are exempt from that requirement

Please note that even if you are a citizen of a country whose citizens are generally visa-free, the visa-free regime applies only to short stays up to 90 days of non-profit nature in the Czech Republic. If your purpose of stay in the Czech Republic is short-term employment or another paid activity, you still need to apply for a Schengen visa.

Holders of residence, re-entry permits and long-term visas  in a Schengen State do not need a visa to enter the other Schengen States. Such visits are of maximum 90 days in any 180-day period.

All applicants (SA citizens and citizens of other countries residing legally in SA on the basis of valid residence permit) are allowed to apply for the visa at VFS Global.

Applicants for Schengen Visa from Botswana can apply as well at Visa Application Centre of VFS Global in Gaborone:

The supporting documents for travelling to the Czech Republic must be submitted in English.

In connection with the Amendment to the Visa Code, effective from 2 February 2020, we announce that from 2 February 2020 the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Pretoria will not accept standard Schengen Visa applications at the visa section. Visa applications will only be accepted if submitted through the VFS Visa Centers in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Gaborone.

The possibility of accepting Visa applications at the Embassy for EU family members, holders of Diplomatic and Service passports, Official Delegations, family members of Embassy staff of the host country or for urgent humanitarian reasons will be retained.
