Health insurance for long term visas and long term residence applicants - new conditions since 2th August 2021

With the amendment of the Act on the Residence of Foreigners with effect from 2 August 2021, the conditions for proving insurance have changed and the Act has newly enshrined the obligation to provide comprehensive health insurance with the General Health Insurance Company (PVZP).  On this website you will find information about comprehensive insurance for foreigners.  There is also the possibility to take out this insurance remotely from abroad.

  1 / Applications for a long-term visa or long-term stay submitted after 2 August 2021
Before issuing a long-term visa, or  of a long-term visa for the purpose of taking over a residence permit, the foreigner submits to the embassy (before the visa is issued):

  a) for the first 90 days of stay health insurance in the scope of necessary and urgent care (concluded by an insurance company other than PVZP authorized to negotiate insurance according to § 180j par. 2 ZPC) and for the remaining period of health insurance in the scope of comprehensive health care (concluded only with PVZP)  .  In this case, the embassy checks both insurance contracts.

  or

  b) for the entire period of stay, health insurance in the scope of comprehensive care (contract concluded only with PVZP).  The embassy checks only one insurance contract.

2 / Documentation of insurance contracts of participants in public health insurance

Participants in public health insurance, including applicants for employment cards, blue cards, long-term residence of a scientific researcher, permanent residence, long-term visa for the purpose of seasonal employment, etc., are not subject to the obligation of travel health insurance in the scope of comprehensive care.  According to the law, insurance for them is paid by employers in the Czech Republic, so these foreigners translate as before only an insurance contract to the extent of necessary and urgent health care until public health insurance (usually 40 days) applies to them.
