Kosovo National Library celebrates its 70th anniversary

(This article expired 28.12.2018.)

On 25th November, a ceremonial event took place in the Great Amphitheatre of the Kosovo National Library to celebrate 70th anniversary of its establishment. History and significance of the library as well as its perspectives for the future were presented to the auditorium, in presence of the representatives of Kosovo cultural life and diplomatic corps. National Library has at its disposal about 200 000 book titles and more than 2 million copies of the books.

Kosovo National Library was established in 1944, firstly located in Prizren, former Kosovo capital and later on it moved to Pristina. The Library experienced a lot of damage during the War of 1998/1999, when facilities were flooded.  After the War the Library was stage by stage reconstructed. Name of the Library was changed from “University Library” to National Library “Pjetër Bogdani”. Pjetër Bogdani lived in the 17th Century and was a Catholic bishop of Shkodra (north Albania) and Skopje (current capital of FYROM) while having Kosovo under his authority. Bogdani as a priest and writer belongs to the most respected historic personalities of the Albanians because of his fight against Turkish Empire’s dominance. He died in Pristina at the end of the 17th Century.

The biggest support in the reconstruction of the premises, digitalization of the books and acquisition of new books to the National Library was provided by the US Embassy in Pristina. In 2012, the Czech Republic through its Embassy in Pristina established a reader’s corner, for the blind and persons with partially impaired vision, and equipped it with IT technology.
