European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for the first time in Kosovo

On February 28, 2018 the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker concluded his Western Balkans tour in Pristina, accompanied by High Representative/Vice President, Federica Mogherini and Enlargement Commissioner Johaness Hahn.

Talks with President of Kosovo Hashim Thaçi, party leaders and dialogue with Kosovo’s youth marked the visit of EU leaders to Kosovo. “You merit a future free of corruption, based on justice and rule of law. No one will be left behind, but still many obstacles ahead,” said President Juncker. Juncker spoke about the need to pass the demarcation agreement with Montenegro and the need for reaching a binding agreement with Serbia on normalization of relations. “It is crucial for your country to vote on demarcation, it’s a key step, inevitable and absolutely necessary for visa liberalization,” he said at a joint press conference with Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi. Juncker declined to offer a set date for potential visa liberalization for Kosovo. President Juncker emphasized that ratification of the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro is key, inevitable and important step for visa liberalization. The EU leaders, held also a town hall meeting with Kosovo students, entrepreneurs, young leaders and journalists at the National Library of Kosovo. “We have come to Kosovo to listen to you on how to make progress to European perspective faster; you are the future; we count on you,” the EU leaders told the participants.
