Statement by Heads of EU Mission in Kosovo on early parliamentary elections, 6 October 2019

Following the invitation from President Thaçi, an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) was deployed to observe the early parliamentary elections of 6 October 2019. Elections are one of the fundamental components of democracy. They represent an opportunity for the people of Kosovo to exercise their democratic right to vote and elect their leaders.

The EU calls for the electoral process to be conducted in a peaceful, transparent and inclusive manner, in line with international standards and the Rule of Law. All political parties and leaders should ensure a respectful campaign focused on concrete programmes in the interest of Kosovo people.

Strengthening the electoral process is an essential part of the electoral cycle and of utmost importance in Kosovo. The EU and OSCE have jointly supported the formation of an Assembly Ad Hoc Committee and Advisory Group on this matter. We invite all parties to take the efforts of the Committee seriously and step up its work after the elections in order to implement recommendations of the EU EUOM.
