Autism – a challenge for everybody

On April 2, 2015 on the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, a Kosovar NGO “Autizmi Association”, in cooperation with “Association Syndrome Down Kosovo” organized in Pristina a Gala Evening to support autistic children. The main goal of the event was to raise funds for the construction of a new care center building for autistic children. Works of art were offered at auction and Kosovars from diaspora were actively participating via direct broadcast.

Mrs. Shpresa Xhakli, member of the leadership of the association and mother of autistic Arben, at the end of the evening could confirm with satisfaction that now the works for construction of the care center can start. A whole range of companies confirmed to provide construction and other works free of charge, Municipality of Pristina promised to provide the land and donations from individuals ranged from 10 € up to 150.000 €, the amount donated by the Shpresa Xhakli’s family.

The event was supported by the diplomatic missions in Pristina – the German, US, Swiss, Austrian and the Czech Embassy.  The Czech Embassy is devoted to help disabled children on a long-term basis, for example in the framework of the development cooperation projects providing assistance and inclusion of children with Down syndrome, the blind and visually impaired, the deaf and other handicapped.

Another successful event with the aim of raising public awareness on autism and highlight extraordinary talents of autistic children was an interactive lecture “Autism and Talents” by Adam Ockelford, British specialist on music therapy and autism, elaborating on virtuous performance of pieces of music by his student Derek Paravicini from London, an autistic prodigi. The event took place on April 20, 2015 in Pristina.
