Railway and energy efficiency – new opportunities for the Czech companies in Kosovo

On April 26, 2016 a regional conference “Western Balkans’ Sustainable Energy Policies” took place in Pristina. The conference created a space for expert discussion about energy and infrastructure connecting countries in the region as cornerstones of economic development of Kosovo and Western Balkan countries.

Plans for restoration of the existing railway network, construction of a new power plant and reconstruction of the existing coal-fired power plants in Kosovo, improvement of energy efficiency of buildings and linking Western Balkan countries to a gas pipeline belong particularly to the most significant new opportunities.

In the section focused on energy efficiency and renewable sources, it was noted that approx. 2,700 projects for renewable energy sources (water, wind, solar and geothermal energy and biomass) had been drafted in the region.

In the section dedicated to connectivity, a matter of interconnecting countries of the region by energy networks was discussed. In addition to the high-voltage network, there were also taken into consideration renewal and construction of a new railway network and building gas-pipelines. The Kosovo government expects to keep the main energy networks as a state ownership and to privatize the local network.

New possibilities, especially in the field of renewing and construction of the railway network, and improving the energy efficiency of buildings will be opened for the Czech companies in addition to the already existing trade and economic opportunities in Kosovo.
