Accomplished Czech Pianist Brings Czech Music to Palestine Through a Series of Masterclasses and Concerts in Bethlehem and Ramallah

On 21 and 22 October 2022, the Representative Office of the Czech Republic in Ramallah organized a series of masterclasses and concerts of the talented Czech pianist Magdalena Koudelková at the branches of the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Bethlehem and Ramallah.

Under the guidance of Magdalena Koudelková, a student at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and winner of numerous piano competitions, pupils from the piano departments of the conservatory practiced the interpretation of classical pieces of European composers, including W. A. ​​Mozart and J. Haydn. The music workshops were followed by concerts during which Magdalena Koudelková introduced the works of Czech composers B. Smetana, L. Janáček and B. Martinů to the Palestinian audience. In Bethlehem, the concert of the accomplished Czech pianist was followed the performance of students of other departments of the conservatory who performed Arabic music on traditional instruments.

With this series of masterclasses and concerts, the Representative Office of the Czech Republic in Ramallah is following up on its long-term cooperation with the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in the field of cultural diplomacy. In 2020, the Czech Republic provided Czech-made musical instruments to the conservatory through a small local project.

The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music was founded in 1993 and is part of Bir Zeit University. The conservatory has branches in major cities in the West Bank as well as in Jerusalem and in Gaza and provides music education to over 1,000 pupils from five to 18 years old, offering scholarships for talented students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The institution has several orchestras and organizes various festivals.
