The Permanent Representation and EUROPEUM hosting a conference “EU as a leader in AI excellence” on May 7

On Tuesday, May 7, the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the European Union together with EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy are hosting a conference entitled “EU as a leader in AI excellence” at the premises of the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU in Brussels (Rue Caroly 15). Registrations (see below) are open until May 3. The list of speakers includes Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Věra Jourová, among others.

Artificial Intelligence is the trending concept in the technological world as well as the new hot word in the core of the discussions about the future digital policy of the EU. The European Commission pledged to reinforce AI research excellence in the EU and called on the Member States to do likewise in the Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence in December 2018.

Europe plans to increase its investment into the development of AI, scale up national research capacities through networks of European AI research centres and mobilise industry to join forces and make sure the technology and inventions come the whole way “from the lab to the market”.

What are the main challenges ahead of us in this regard? What is the current state of play of European AI research and where are we in comparison with China, Japan or USA? How the Commission plans to support the researchers and future technological development? Is the increase of investments radical enough? What the Member States are doing in order to stay competitive and attain talents? How to strengthen the cooperation between the research facilities and industry? These are the questions that we will address on May 7 with the following panelists:

Věra Jourová, Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, will deliver a keynote speech following the welcoming remarks by Ambassador Jaroslav Zajíček, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the EU. Other speakers include: Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic Petr Očko, AI National Strategy Coordinator of France Bertrand Pailhès, Deputy Director-General of DG CONNECT Khalil Rouhana, Vice-President of the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic Milena Jabůrková and Director of Artificial Intelligence Center at the Czech Technical University in Prague Michal Pěchouček. The event will be moderated by Magnus Franklin from Teneo Brussels.

The conference is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic. Registration will start at 9:30 and the conference will be followed by a lunch.
