Koncert ke státnímu svátku ČR Dne vzniku samostatného státu 28. října v Rize

Dne 23. října 2010 se uskutečnil koncert českých umělkyň – mezzosopranistky Andrey Kalivodové, sólistky Státní opery Praha, a klavíristky Kristiny Kasíkové, ve Velkém sále Lotyšské hudební akademie Jázepse Vítolse jako součást oslav státního svátku ČR. Koncert zároveň připomněl letošní výročí hudebních velikánů G. Mahlera a F. Chopina.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my pleasure and  honour to welcome you to the concert given on the occasion of the National Day of the Czech Republic, a commemoration of the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic on 28th October, 1918. I´d like to thank to Rector of the  Latvian Academy of Music, Mr. Artis Símanis, for the opportunity of having this event  here, in the premises of  this  exceptionally important Latvian cultural institution.

The both performers, mezzo-sopranist Andrea Kalivodová and  pianist Kristina Kasíková are prepared to interpret 9 pieces  from the repertoire of famous European compositors, in terms of their origin and activity falling within the musically extraordinarly productive period between  the  beginning of 19th and beginning of 20th century.

Now,  allow me few remarks on the margin of the structure of repertoire.

The choice of Gustav Mahler and Frederyk Chopin is no coincidence, this year we are commemorating 140 years since  Mahler´s birthday and 200 years´ anniversary of Chopin´s  birthday. This is  the opportunity for presentation of works of both great musicians to cultural public all around Europe. By the way, the Latvian National Symphonic Orchestra is opening  a new musical season by performing Mahler´s Second symphony just today.

We all certainly agree that Chopin is indisputable, iconic representant of  the Polish cultural heritage. As concerns Mahler, the anniversary reopens space for never ending - and  in reality substance lacking – disputes, whether Mahler is of Czech or of Austrian origin. To those, who might be puzzled by the fact that we are celebrating the Czech National Day by the music of Austrian composer, I must say, that Mahler, similarly like some other famous artists and scientists in his days, - e.g. Sigmund Freud - can be identified both as a Czech as well as an Austrian. He was born in Moravia - then part of the Austrian monarchy - into Jewish, German speaking family. Having been until his twenties  strongly influenced by the  Czech cultural sorroundings, he then lived  and became famous in several Central European capitals. The post of the director of Vienna´s Opera marked a culmination of his musical career. From this perspective he was Central European, or if you want, cosmopolitan personality. This is something very typical for Central Europe of the period before the First World War, characterized by economic growth accompanied with creative synthesis of different national cultures and  influences.

I hope, that you´ll accept my conclusion that performance of Mahler´s music on the Czech National Day is no less dignified commemoration of the National Day of Austria on 26th November. In this sense, it becomes a  sort of reminder of  historical and cultural closeness between both our nations. There is a certain paradox in  this fact, because both Czech and Austrian Republic arose  practically in the same moment from the ruins of the Empire which highlighted and highly evaluated Mahler´s artistic qualities.

You´ll also listen to the several songs composed by Mahler´s wife Alma, the proverbial  „femme fatale“ of the intellectual elite in Vienna, whose charm had a strong, often destructive effect on the emotional  lives of many members of  local artistic community. But that´s  another story...

I am apologizing  for  my „Mahlerian“ digression and I hope that its meaning in the context of the Czech National day is not  incomprehensible to the Latvian public, which, like people in Central Europe, is also often confronted with sometimes absurd complexities of its own´s cultural and ethnical environment.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I believe that distinguished audience of this concert on the occasion of the Czech National Day will experience the mastership of both performers and I wish to all of you an enjoyable evening.
