Information about Travel Documents - the Amendment to the Schengen Borders Code

On July 19, 2013 the amendment to the Schengen Borders Code came into force, which regulates the requirements for the validity of the travel documents of third-country nationals entering the Schengen Area.

According to new amendments to the Schengen Borders Code the third-country nationals entering the Schengen Area will need to have travel documents issued over the course of the past decade and valid at least three months following the
date of planned departure from the territory of member states.

The above requirements are applied to the third-country nationals both while applying for a visa (see Visa Code Article 12 p. a) and c)) and while applying for entry into the Schengen area in general, i.e. in case of visa-free foreign nationals.
