Ambassador of the Czech Republic Miroslav Kosek Opened the Exhibition "The End of the Prague Spring. The Tragic Protest of Student Jan Palach."

The exhibition was prepared by the National Museum of the Czech Republic, Petr Blažek, Patrik Eichler, Jakub Jareš, Marek Junek are the authors of the exhibition.
 

The exhibition has been opened in cooperation with the National Museum of history of Latvia and the Latvian State Archive with the  great interest of professionals, public and media on March 7 at the premises of National Museum of History.
Another  part of the exhibition about Jan Palach named "The Aftermath of Prague Spring and Charter 77 in Latvia / the Baltics" in electronic form has been simultaneously introduced  by the Latvian State Archive.

The lecture by the Professor of the University of Latvia Mr. Igors Šuvajevs "Politics and Philosophy. Palach case " preceded the opening of the exhibition. Professor Šuvajevs presented to the guests, to the historians, students, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Latvian Parliament, members of the Latvia-Czech society and media representatives the  ideas of Jan Hus, J. A. Komenský, T. G. Masaryk, Jan Patočka and Václav Havel. Professor reviewed Jan Palach's deed,  his protest against reconciliation with the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops, the end of the Prague Spring, under various angles.

The exhibition has been then opened by the  director of the National History Museum of Latvia Dr. hist. Arnis Radiņš, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Latvia Miroslav Kosek and Dr. Hist. Ritvars Jansons from the Latvian State Archive.

The exhibition consists of two parts. The first describes the life and deed of Jan Palach, who burned himself as the protest against the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia on  January 16, 1969. The second part presents a architectonic-design competition for a memorial of Jan Palach in his hometown Všetaty. The death mask of student Jan Palach is exposed within the exhibition.

The exhibition is open till 30 March 2017.
