On Tuesday,  June 6, an exhibition commemorating the 75th anniversary of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich was opened at the War Museum in Riga under the patronage of the Czech Republic's Defense Minister.

The exhibition, the author of which is the Military History Institute of Prague, took place in collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Riga. The contribution to this exhibition was also provided by the Embassy of Slovak Republic and embassies of Israel and the United Kingdom in Latvia. The Army of the Czech Republic was represented by the Director of the Military History Institute Prague col. Aleš Knížek with colleagues and attaché of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic for the Baltics.

After the introductory speech of Ambassador Miroslav Kosek, a two-hour seminar for the professional and non-professional public took place in the lecture hall of the  War Museum. The lectures were made by historian Zdeněk Špitálník from Military History Institute ("Assassination of Heydrich"), Jānis Tomaševskis from the Latvian War Museum , Iļja Lenskis, the Director of the Latvian Jewish Museum ("Holocaust in Latvia – General Overview ") and Col. Michal Burian ("Anthropoid - Fiction and Reality") from Military History Institute of Prague.

Then, the  Ambassador  of the Czech Republic to Latvia Mr. Miroslav Kosek and the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic  Mr. Peter Hatiar officially opened the exhibition  "Assassination of Reinhard Heydrich - The Death of the Holocaust Architect" at the premises of the War Museum.

The exhibition is a reminder of the 75th anniversary of the most significant Czechoslovak resistance movement and one of the largest resistance events in occupied Europe during World War II. The asassination of the Reich Protector was a joint operation of foreign and domestic resistance. Its implementation resulted in the launch of brutal retaliatory measures and had no analogues so far at the Protectorate, including the firing of Lidice and the execution of thousands of Czech patriots.

The fourteen panels of exhibition remind us about  the war events from 1939 till 1945. The core of the exhibition covers  the events of Autumn 1941, when Reinhard Heydrich as a representative of the Reich protectorate arrived in Prague, till May 1942 when the assassination took place. The panels of the exhibition shows the preparation of the assassination, its execution by members of Czechoslovak foreign units, cooperation with the domestic resistance, etc.

An important part of the exhibition is dedicated to the personality of R. Heydrich and his plans for the so-called final solution of the Jewish question as its main author since 1939.

In a broader aspect the exhibition highlights  the relationship between the Czechoslovak, respectively Czech and Jewish peoples, as well as the State of Israel in 20th century during  the president Masarik times, who was one of the main supporters of the so-called Hilsner affair ( 1899 – 1900) until  the end of 1940-ies, when Czechoslovakia helped Israel shortly after its establishment with the arms supply.

In addition to the text and visual documents, the exhibition also includes the exact replicas of some items related to the assassination, which were used by actors Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan in movie Anthropoid, for example Jozef Gabčík jacket, Jan Kubiš sweater and shirt and British Anti-tank grenade used during the attack on Heydrich.

The final part of the commemoration event was  the Latvian premiere of movie Anthropoid by director Sean Ellis in the K-Suns cinema. The film was screend in English with simultaneous translation into Latvian.

This commemorative event met a great interest  among the professionals and public, representatives of cultural and social life, representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of the Latvian - Czech society, students of the University of Latvia and cadets from the Military Academy and representatives of the Latvian media. The reportage of the opening of the exhibition was carried out by the Czech TV reporter M. Karas.
