Czech Literature in Latvia

On May 17, 2018, the presentation of books by Czech authors translated into Latvia over the past years took place in Riga Academic Library of the University of Latvia.

The meeting with publishers, heads of academic libraries, members of the Latvia-Czech society and readers was opened by Halina Lapiņa, Czech Ambassador Miroslav Kosek and Director of Academic Library Venta Kocere. Then, the individual publications were read, including the extracts from History of Light by Jan Němec (Gaismas vēsture Publishing House, translation by Jānis Krastiņš), Vaculík by Morčat Lukáš (Jumava Publishing House, Sandra Nikuļeva's translation, Ieva Tūtere's readings), The magicians by Miloš Kratochvíl (Pētergailis Publishing House, translation by Halina Lapiņa). The extracts from the Czech originals were read by Miroslav Kosek and Alena Rejlová. Last year, there was published a book About parents and children by Emil Hakl (Pētergailis Publishing House, translation by Halina Lapina).

The meeting was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Thanks to the publishers Inguna Cepīte (Pētergailis), Raitis Kolesnikovs (Lasītava), representatives of Jumava and enthusiastic translators Halina Lapiņa, Jānis Krastiņš and Sandra Nikuļceva, there is an increasing number of published Czech works and of Latvian readers and supporters of Czech literature and culture.
