Epoque Quartet in Riga on the occasion of CZ EU PRES

On the occasion of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU, the successful Czech string quartet Epoque Quartet performed on September 7th in the largest hall of the National Library of Latvia (NLL) in Riga. The concert started with an opening speech by H. E. Ambassador Jana Hynková. After that, Vít Petrášek, David Pokorný, Vladan Malinjak and Vladimír Klánský performed works by Czech and foreign composers and received enthusiastic applause from the audience.

In her opening speech, Ambassador Ms Jana Hynková summarized the main priorities of the EU CZ PRES and briefly outlined the course of the Presidency so far, with an emphasis on current international events, especially the situation in Ukraine. The opening was followed by a concert by the ensemble Epoque Quartet, which opened with the EU anthem, Ode to Joy, and continued with an excellent mix of classical music (A. Dvořák) and music of slightly different genres, such as film music, for example by J. Williams from the film Schindler's List, or Ave Maria by Piazzolla. There was also the composition "Birth" by contemporary Czech composer Jan Kučera, who has been a long-term co-worker with the Epoque Quartet. The planned part of the concert ended with a long applause, which made the artists return twice to the stage with an encore, and surprised the audience by playing an instrumental adaptation of the Latvian folk song "Pūt vējiņi" (Blow, Wind).

Nearly 200 spectators gathered in the NLL Ziedonis hall, including many representatives of the diplomatic community, foreign and defense Ministries and other institutions, national commanders of NATO eFP units, including seven members of the 9th Task Force of the Czech Army, members of the Latvian-Czech Society, as well as several members of the Latvian Jawa Club, and students from the University of Latvia, who study Czech language, and many others.

The concert was followed by the opening of the exhibition " UNESCO: Czech Heritage", with the subtitle "Style is not to be written, style is to be looked at" and a glass of wine in the adjacent premises of the NLL.
