Seminar on Czech and Latvian Literary Translations "FROM THE WHITE CARPATHIANS TO THE BALTIC SEA"

On the occasion of the Czech Presidency of the EU Council, the Day of European Languages and the Day of Translators, a popular science seminar and discussion on Czech and Latvian literary translations "From the White Carpathians to the Baltic Sea: three decades of Czech and Latvian literary translations (1992-2022)" took place on 27 September 2022 in the AsiaRes Reading Room of the National Library of Latvia.

The event was organised by the National Library of Latvia, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Latvia, the Centre of Bohemistics and Polonistics of the University of Latvia and the Union Latvia-Czechia. The event was opened by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Jana Hynková and the Deputy Director of the National Library of Latvia Anda Lamaša, who also presented the collection of Czech and Latvian translated literature.

Nadežda Kopoloveca, associate professor at the University of Latvia, spoke about translations of Czech fiction into Latvian from 1992 to 2022. Translator Jānis Krastiņš, winner of the Gratias Agit Award by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, shared his experience in translating Czech fiction. Michal Škrabal, Head of the Institute of the Czech National Corpus, spoke about translations of Latvian fiction into Czech, and Halina Lapiņa, translator and President of the Union Latvia-Czechia, informed about the latest translations of Czech fiction into Latvian. The discussion was moderated by Aiga Veckalne, translator and lecturer at Ventspils University College.

The event was attended by 40 people, including representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, representatives of universities and libraries, members of the Union Latvia-Czechia and students from the University of Latvia and others.
