Summer Schools of Slavonic Studies 2020

Summer Schools of Slavonic Studies (SSSS) are study courses organized by several public universities in the Czech Republic. Courses are held annually during the summer months (July, August, September). Their duration ranges from 3 to 4 weeks. The length of the course is determined by the organizing school.

Within the framework of their educational blocks, the individual organizing schools offer Czech language courses at various levels of proficiency, selective seminars focused on Czech literature, culture and history, leisure activities including theater, music and dance performances, excursions, sightseeing tours, etc. 

The courses are designed for foreign students, specialists (teachers, translators, interpreters) and academics in the field of Czech studies and Slavonic studies who are over 18 years old. However, they are open to all those interested in the Czech language, literature, history, and culture.


Who can apply for an SSSS scholarship?

Applicants from 18 years of age from the following countries and territories can apply for an SSSS scholarship:

Albania, Austria, Belgium - Flanders, Belgium - Wallonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada (Alberta), Colombia, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Mongolia, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, People's Republic of China, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, United Kingdom, USA, and Vietnam.

The scholarships are only granted to candidates nominated by the competent authorities of the partner countries or by the competent authorities e.g. embassies of the Czech Republic abroad.

The scholarship includes:

  • accommodation and meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner);
  • enrollment and tuition;
  • trips and excursions;
  • some Summer Schools also provide public transport tickets (information available on the website of the relevant Summer School).

The scholarship does not include:

  • international transport costs;
  • insurance costs;
  • visa processing costs.

How to apply?

The application also includes a CV written in Czech or English and a copy of your identity card (ID card or passport). The institution receiving the application may require the submission of other documents (e.g. a letter of motivation, a language level certificate, etc.).

The application also includes a statement that the candidate can participate in the entire duration of the SSSS course.

The number of places provided and their distribution among individual Summer Schools is determined by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MEYS). Further information on which Summer School applicants can apply for should be provided by the institution receiving the scholarship application.

The application form with the attachments must be submitted to a competent institution receiving applications (it may be a local agency or a ministry, in some countries the selection is made by the Czech embassy). For more information please contact the Czech embassy in a specific country.

Applications sent directly to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports or the relevant Summer Schools will not be accepted. The deadline for submitting applications is set by the receiving institution.


Selection of candidates

The institution receiving the application shall nominate: i) regular nominees, and ii) alternates (up to twice as many as regular nominees), and deliver their nomination to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports by 31 March 2020 at the latest.

Successful candidates will be contacted directly by the organizer of the assigned Summer School.

The successful candidate is obliged to confirm his/her participation after contacting by the organizer of the Summer School. If a candidate is unable to attend the Summer School, he/she immediately informs the Ministry of Education (contact email: matus.ziga@msmt.cz) or the contact person of the relevant Summer School. 

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports reserves the right to place a successful candidate in a Summer School other than the one he/she chose on his/her application.

Excuse not to attend SSSS courses

If one of the officially nominated and admitted LSSSS participants is unable to attend the courses due to unforeseen reasons, he/she must immediately inform the Department of International Relations of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports at e-mail address matus.ziga@msmt.cz, as well as the relevant Summer School so that an alternate can be contacted immediately.

If the quota of scholarships (regular nominees and alternates) offered to a given partner country at one of the organizing schools is not met, it is possible to provide these unused scholarships to candidates from another partner country.

Health insurance

Health insurance is NOT included in the scholarship. Successful candidates are strongly advised to arrange travel health insurance for their entire stay in the Czech Republic. More information can be provided by the Czech Embassy in the country of origin of the candidate.

Neither the MEYS nor the universities that organize the SSSS are responsible for the reimbursement of any health care costs that may be incurred during their stay in the Czech Republic, nor for any repatriation costs.

Visas

The conditions of entry and residence of foreigners in the Czech Republic from countries with visa requirements can be found on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports recommends that both regular nominees and alternates from countries with a visa requirement apply for a visa well in advance.

Participation in SSSS as a self-payer

Those interested can apply for the Summer School of Slavonic Studies as self-payers who will cover all costs themselves. Information on registration as a self-payer is available on the websites of the respective organizing schools.
