Conclusion of the Czech Presidency of the EU Council in Latvia

On 12 January 2023, the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU in Latvia ended with a symbolic handover of the baton at the Swedish Embassy in Riga. The Ambassador of the Czech Republic Ms Jana Hynková summarized the major achievements of CZ EU PRES and handed over the Presidency baton to her Swedish colleague Karin Höglund. The Czech Embassy in Latvia was very active throughout the six months of CZ PRES and organized many successful events.

On Thursday, 12 January 2023, the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union has officially ended in Latvia. During the programme organized by the incoming Swedish Presidency, Ambassador Ms Jana Hynková handed over the baton to her Swedish colleague. In her speech, she summarized the biggest achievements of the CZ EU PRES, including the agreement on three more sanctions packages against Russia and the EU-wide financial and military assistance to Ukraine. Among the positive results of the negotiations by the Czech Republic is also the progress in the enlargement process, i.e. the granting of candidate status to Bosnia and Herzegovina and support for the EU aspirations of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. Among the most important milestones of the CZ PRES are also the approval of all climate parts of the Fit for 55 package and, last but not least, reaching a broad consensus among Member States on capping gas prices.

A large numbers of events related to the Czech Presidency also took place in Latvia. Besides major cultural events for the public - concert by the Epoque Quartet in September, the exhibition "UNESCO:  Czech Heritage " and the exhibition Václav Havel, which opened on the eve of the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution and was associated with Human Rights Day - the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Latvia also organized a number of working meetings with prominent Latvian officials. At the very beginning of the presidency, there was a working lunch between EU ambassadors and Latvian Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, in December was meeting and discussion between EU ambassadors and the new Speaker of the Saeima, Edvards Smiltens. The final CZ PRES event at the highest level was a working lunch with the President of Latvia, H.E. Egils Levits. Before the parliamentary elections in October, was organized a discussion with political scientist Filips Rajevskis, as well as a practical meeting of consuls of European countries with representatives of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence and the Latvian Fire Brigade. The Foreign offices of the Czech Republic also took part in the organization of the conference of telecommunications regulators of the Eastern Partnership countries EaPeReg (Eastern Partnership Electronic Communications Regulators Network), which was organized in Riga by the European support agency BEREC. In the first half of the presidential term, Ambassador Ms Jana Hynková presented CZ PRES priorities to a joint meeting of the European and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Latvian Parliament Saeima and to representatives of the Latvian Ministry of Defence, the President's Office and the Government Office.
