Czech and German Consulates in Shanghai commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Velvet revolution and the fall of the Berlin wall.

Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Shanghai and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany worked together to commemorate the 30h anniversary of the Velvet revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall through exhibition of historical photographs, film screenings and discussion.

Since 4 November 2019, visitors can visit the Department of culture and education of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany to view historical photographs depicting the Velvet revolution. They can also learn more about the role of the German Embassy in Prague, which became a temporary shelter for German citizens attempting to get into West Germany.

Visitors could familiarize themselves with the events surrounding the German Embassy in Prague even more by attending the screening of the movie „Zug in Die Freihet“ on 6 November. On the background of historical events, the movie depicts stories of German citizens gathering at the German Embassy in Prague; their worry, uncertainty, but also determination and hope that they will be allowed to enter into West Germany.

The final event was a discussion titled „The German Embassy in Prague – the Forgotten Prelude to the Fall of the Berlin Wall“ attended by the Consul General of Czech Republic, Mr. Richard Krpač and Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Christine D. Althauser as the speakers. Both guests shared their experience and memories from 1989 and contemplated the current situation in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Europe when it comes to tearing down or creation of new “walls”. Second half of the discussion was dedicated to questions from the audience.

Photo exhibition can be viewed at the Department of culture and education of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany until the middle of December 2019.
