Changes in Travel Health Insurance for stays longer than 90 days

As of August 2, 2021, the amendment of Act No. 326/1999 Coll., on the Residence of Foreign Nationals in the Czech Republic, came into effect which resulted in essential change in the submission of travel health insurance document for stays longer than 90 days.

The changes are as follows:

1) extending the insurance coverage from the extent of necessary and urgent health care to comprehensive health care,

2) in the upcoming five years (i.e. from August 2nd, 2021 to August 2nd, 2026) only the Pojišťovna VZP a.s. is exclusively entitled to arrange travel health insurance in the scope of comprehensive health care,

3) this obligation does not apply to foreigners who contribute to public health insurance (e.g. if it concerns a stay for the purpose of employment, proof of health travel insurance is only required for the period of entry until the beginning of employment) or whose health care is covered on the basis of an international agreement, or who hold a valid EHIC and GHIC health insurance cards or who are EU citizens or their close family members.

If the foreigner has submitted an application for a long-term visa/residence permit before August 1st, 2021 (inclusive), he/she can enter the Czech Republic with travel health insurance covering the necessary and urgent health care valid for the entire duration of the stay concluded with another insurance company (other than VZP a.s.) in the Czech Republic (the insurance policy is submitted to the Consulate when collecting the visa); however, within 90 days from the date of entry to the Czech Republic the foreigner is obliged to arrange the health insurance in scope of comprehensive health care with the Pojištovna VZP a.s.

If the foreigner has submitted an application for a long-term visa/residence permit on August 2nd, 2021 or later, he/she is obliged to submit the following to the Consulate when collecting the visa:

  • travel health insurance for the first 90 days of the stay in scope of necessary and urgent care (concluded with an insurance company other than Pojišťovna VZP, authorized to provide its insurance services according to § 180j 2 of the Act on the Residence of Foreign Nationals in the Czech Republic) and for the remaining period of stay a travel health insurance in the scope of comprehensive health care (concluded with Pojišťovna VZP a.s. only).

  • or travel health insurance for the whole duration of stay in scope of comprehensive health care concluded with Pojišťovna VZP a.s.(possible to conclude online). Travel health insurance in scope of comprehensive health care for the whole duration of stay concluded with other insurance company than VZP can be submitted only if the insurance policy was concluded no later than August 1, 2021.
