Ambassador's Welcome Words

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends of the Czech Republic,

today, on the Czech Statehood Day, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Singapore.

For the first time in the history of Czech-Singaporean relations, we are opening an Embassy headed by the Ambassador in residence in this beautiful country and it is my great honour to be able to greet you from Singapore itself. Even though I mentioned "for the first time", it does not mean that we have nothing to build on. While the beginnings of our relations date back to the 1930s, the diplomatic relations were officially established in 1973. The Czech Embassy in Singapore even operated between 1996 and 2008, but was managed at the level of a chargé d'affaires. The relations were then administered from Indonesia until 2020, with the active help of the Czech honorary consulate in Singapore.

So today, we are starting the next stage of cooperation between our countries. This embassy will endeavour to utilise, capitalise on and offer to Singapore as much as possible of the specific Czech experience, knowledge and know-how. Whether it is a strong tradition of research and innovation, a very high quality education and healthcare system, a high level of engineering and food production and last but not least, world-famous art.

Our goal is to establish the closest possible contacts between Czechs and Singaporeans. We would like the Embassy to be a meeting place or a platform for exchanging experiences and forging new bonds and friendships. We shall therefore do our best to shorten the 10,000 kilometres distance between our homes.

Obviously, opening an embassy at a time when the whole world is affected by the coronavirus pandemic is not easy. For the second year in a row, we are all limited in our daily activities, and Czech diplomacy is not spared either. Unfortunately, many of the Embassy's standard services, including the consular and visa section, are not yet fully operational. However, I can assure you, that my team and I are making every effort to make them fully available as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding and I hope to meet you in person in the near future at one of the events hosted by the Embassy.

Finally, I wish Czech-Singapore relations a successful start of a new chapter in their history.
