Travel Medical Insurance - complete information

Proof of travel medical insurance shall be presented:
-
Prior to affixing a LONG-TERM visa (not when submitting the application).
-  TOGETHER with SCHENGEN visa application submission. 


Below you can find the specific requirements for all visa types:

A) SCHENGEN VISA

When you apply for a Schengen visa, you need to arrange for a travel medical insurance covering all expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death.

The insurance must be IN THE NAME OF THE VISA APPLICANT  and valid throughout the ENTIRE Schengen Area and cover the entire period of stay (transit).

The minimum coverage must be EUR 30,000 for necessary and urgent medical care.

This insurance may be taken out with an insurance company authorised to operate this insurance in the Czech Republic or in other EU Member States / States bound by the European Economic Area (EEA) Treaty or in the home state.

When travelling based on an invitation officially verified by the Alien Police Service, the insurance coverage referred to therein pertains only to the territory of the Czech Republic. Applicants are therefore requested to arrange coverage for the entire Schengen Area confirming to the above specifications.

You need to show to the Embassy the whole document "terms and conditions" of the insurance to prove the above!

 

B) LONG-TERM VISAS (stays over 90 days up to 1 year) AND RESIDENCE PERMITS - with exception of Employee cards (see letter C below)!

Travel health insurance must be in visa applicant's name and cover the cost of medical care for the ENTIRE DURATION of the visa validity, which will be communicated to you by the Embassy together with the visa decision well in advance of visa sticker attachment appointment.

The minimum insurance cover must be EUR 60,000 without a deductible.

You need to show to the Embassy the whole document "terms and conditions" of the insurance!

Options:

1) Comprehensive/extensive health care for the entire period of visa validity

- minimal insured limit per claim is EUR 400,000

- must include preventive and dispensary (= regular medical supervision for a specific illness) care as well as care related to pregnancy and childbirth.

  • - arranged with: any insurance company authorised to operate this insurance in the Czech Republic

 

OR

 

2) Necessary and urgent medical care for the first 90 days, then comprehensive/extensive health care

- shall not preclude the provision of insurance coverage in the event of an accident caused by the intentional act, fault or complicity of the insured or as a result of the consumption of alcohol, narcotic or psychotropic substances.Only necessary and urgent health care arranged with an insurance company other than the VZP Insurance Company

insured period:

  • for the first 90 days of the stay: nessary and urgent medical care
    • - the minimum coverage must be EUR 30,000 per claim for necessary and urgent medical care.
    • - arranged with: any insurance company authorised to operate this insurance in the Czech Republic or in other EU Member States / States bound by the European Economic Area (EEA) Treaty or in the home state.

       

  • for the remaining period of the stay: comprehensive health care
    • - minimal insured limit per claim is EUR 400,000
    • - arranged with: any insurance company authorised to operate this insurance in the Czech Republic (applicable after 20 September 2023)

 

C) EMPLOYEE CARDS

 

Same as option A , BUT MINIMUM 40 DAYS of insured period after the first day of visa validity.

 

D) VISA-VAIWER FOREIGN NATIONALS (stays up to 90 days)

Foreign nationals who do not require visas for their stay in Czechia / Schengen Area still require medical insurance (see above for Schengen visas), which can be checked at the border crossing. For more information see the website of the Alien Police Service.


The obligation to take out travel health insurance for a stay in the Czech Republic does not apply to the following foreigners (situations):

  • ● the applicant will be covered by public health insurance (e.g. if the applicant is staying for employment purposes, proof of travel health insurance is only required for the period from entry into the territory until the start of the employment relationship - minimum 40 days),
  • ● health care costs will be covered by an international treaty,
  • ● the applicant holds an EHIC and GHIC health insurance card,
  • ● the applicant is an EU citizen or an immediate family member: (1) spouse; (2) parent, if the EU citizen is under the age of 21 and is effectively cared for; (3) descendant under the age of 21 or such descendant of the EU citizen's spouse; (4) a descendant or an ancestor or a descendant or an ancestor of the EU citizen's spouse, if he or she is dependent on the maintenance or other necessary care provided by the EU citizen or his or her spouse for the satisfaction of his or her basic needs, or was dependent on such maintenance or other necessary care immediately before entering the territory of the Czech Republic in the State of which he or she is a citizen or in the State in which he or she was allowed to reside; (5) a foreigner who is related to a Czech citizen registered in the Czech Republic for permanent residence in the relationship referred to in points (1) to (4).
  • ● the applicant proves that health care will be covered in another way, on the basis of a written commitment by a legal entity, if the foreigner's stay in the territory is beneficial for the development of spiritual values, the protection of human rights or other humanitarian values, the protection of the natural environment, cultural monuments and traditions, the development of science, education, physical education and sport, on the basis of a written commitment by a state authority or on the basis of a commitment contained in an official invitation certified by the Aliens Police.
