Import, Export and Transit of Firearms or Non-commercial Purposes

Firearms permits

(Transit/Import/Export)

For official information on the rules on export-import and transit of arms and ammunition, please visit the English version of the Ministry of Interior website www.mvcr.cz, section “Useful Information”, where you’ll find detailed information on this subject. In relation to references made in this information to “Police Headquarters”, please note that the Directorate for Arms and Security material (Ředitelství služby pro zbraně a bezpečnostní materiál) and its sub-divisions at the local Police directorates are in charge of relevant administrative procedures (rsscp@mvcr.cz, 00420-974 834 435) related to permits for import/export/transit of arms and ammunition.

I. European firearms permit

In case of transit, the gun permit is not required for a hunter who is a citizen of one of the EU member states for a hunting gun and ammunition of C category or a sporting shooter for a sport gun of B or C categories and ammunition for this gun, providing that he/she is a holder of the European firearms pass, in which the gun is indicated, and he/she is able to state a purpose of his/her stay (in particular presents a notarized invitation issued by the organizer of the hunting or sporting event in the Czech Republic)

The gun permit is not also required for the other holders of the European firearms pass for guns of B or C categories and ammunition for these guns in case of transit, providing that the gun is indicated in the European firearms pass and the Police Headquarters of the Czech Police has given their prior written approval to the owner. The approval may be issued for 1 year max. This approval is marked in the European firearms pass and it may be extended.

II. Firearms permit

Firearms permit, issued by our Embassy, is required for the other purposes (firearms of B and C categories) and for the firearms of A category and ammunition for these firearms.

A personal appearance while submitting the application for the Firearms permit is required. The applicant shall complete and sign the application form and present following documents:

  • ID card (passport);
  • Firearms License;
  • Firearm Registration Certificate for each firearm he/she entered into the application form; in case of hunting or sporting event, a notarized invitation from the organizers.

In case that you visit the Czech Republic for the hunting or sporting event, the Firearms permit is issued also by the Alien’s Police on the external border of the EU (international airport).

The fee for the Firearms permit is 500,- CZK that is to be paid in SEK – the exact fee is calculated by current exchange rate. There is no fee for foreigners who visit the Czech Republic under the approval or invitation of the Czech government or Parliament or for foreigners who participate in the International shooting competition and there is also no charge for issuance of a Firearms permit for guns obtained as a prize in competition.

 

III. List of firearms and ammunition that can be transferred from the other EU member state to the territory of the Czech Republic without prior consent of the relevant authorities of the Czech Republic for the non-business purposes (category D)

  • historical firearms;
  • single- or double-shot firearms the design of which is based on matchlock, wheel-lock, flint-lock or percussion lock systems;
  • weapons designed for Flobert cartridges whose kinetic energy measured at the muzzle is up to 7.5 J;
  • air cartouche gas weapons;
  • gas weapons whose kinetic energy measured at the muzzle does not exceed 16 J;
  • expansion weapons and expansion devices;
  • mechanical weapons;
  • disabled firearms which have undergone irreversible changes and modifications rendering them unfit for use;
  • firearms which have undergone cutting changes revealing at least a part of their inner mechanism;
  • firearms not listed in categories A to C of the Act on Firearms and Ammunition, paintball firearms in particular; and
  • ammunition for above mentioned firearms.

Import of firearms and ammunition for business purposes is a subject of authorization according to special legislation.

Import of narcotization ammunition and ammunition for percussion or flint-lock firearms is a subject of authorization according to special legislation regardless of non-business purposes of its importation.

 

IV. Transit of Firearms or Ammunition by Foreign Arms Dealers

Foreign arms dealers (companies not registered in the Czech Republic) can transport firearms of A, B or C categories or ammunition for these firearms only if they are holders of valid Permission to Transfer Weapons or Ammunition Transported by the Foreign Arms Dealer. The application for the Permission can be submitted to the Police Headquarters or at our Embassy. The applicant shall complete and sign the application form and present following documents:

  • ID card (passport);
  • documents regarding commercial transit of firearms.

The application is decided by the Police Headquarters of the Czech Police. The fee for the Permission to Transfer Weapons or Ammunition Transported by Dealer is 1.000,- CZK that is to be paid in SEK - the exact fee is calculated by current exchange rate.
