TOYEN and Czech surrealism at Moderna Museet

Czech surrealism was on display at Moderna Museet on July 31, 2018. Duscussion panel „Queer surrealism: Toyen“ moderated by Carlota Mir featured art historians Ladislav Zikmund – Lender and Rado Ištok. The discussion launched surrealism exhibition at Moderna Museet which also contains work of Toyen.

Marie Čermínova, known as Toyen, was a Czech painter, drafter and illustrator and a member of the surrealist movement. Toyen was one of the few female Surrealists, along with Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington and a handful of others. Toyen often dressed in men's clothing and preferred masculine pronouns, choosing a non-conformist position when it came to gender and sexuality, themes heavily mined in Surrealist art.

Toyen and Czech surrealism arranged by Czech Centres, Moderna Museet and Czech Embassy, fittingly complemented other events organized during Stockholm Europride 2018.
