On-line lecture about Czech language

We cordially invite you to watch another on-line lecture about Czech language, this time presented by Mgr. Hana Goláňová, Ph.D., from the Institute of Czech National Corpus, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, entitled Regional speech in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. The lecture will be broadcast in Czech language via Zoom platform on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at 18:00 and streamed in parallel on the Czech Centers Facebook page.

If we meet people from different places in the Czech Republic, we might notice some regionalism - a distinctive linguistic phenomenon specific to a particular region - when we talk to them. In everyday speech, the regional origin of the speaker is always reflected in some way. The whole range of linguistic devices used in different communicative situations can tell us where our roots are. Not only the choice of lexis, certain word forms, but also pronunciation can reveal our origins in communication. The lecture will be devoted to Czech, Moravian and Silesian regionalisms and their use in contemporary, especially spoken, Czech. Examples and linguistic material will be selected from corpora of the spoken language (ORAL, ORTOFON and DIALEKT) and will be confronted with the Czech Language Atlas or with Czech explanatory dictionaries.

Mgr. Hana Goláňová, Ph.D., graduated in Czech language and literature and history at the Faculty of Philosophy and Natural Sciences of the Silesian University in Opava, and completed her doctoral studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague.  She worked at the Institute for the Czech Language of the CAS in the lexicographic and dialectological department and was a member of the author's team of the Dictionary of Czech Dialects. In the section of spoken corpora of the Institute of the Czech National Corpus of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, she continues to work mainly in dialectology and, in addition, in corpus linguistics.
