Ambassador Jiří Šitler at the University of Örebro

On October 9, 2019, ambassador Jiří Šitler was invited by the Örebro University to give a lecture about Czech-German relations, especially how Czechia settled WW2-related historical issues (compensation of Nazi victims) with Germany after the fall of Iron Curtain. The lecture was followed by a vivid discussion.

On the evening of the same day, ambassador also participated in the panel discussion “Thirty years after the fall of the Communist dictatorships in Eastern Europe. How strong is democracy in today´s World?” moderated by the University’s head of communications Sara Arvidson. Other panelists included Svend-Erik Skaaning, professor in Political Science at Aarhus university in Denmark and Ingrid Törnqvist from the Swedish Television (and its former correspondent in Germany and Central and Eastern Europe). The discussion focused on the fall of Iron Curtain, the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution, the legacy of Václav Havel and the state of democracy in the world today.

Agneta Blom, professor of the University and president of the Örebro City Council, organized the event which was part of the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Örebro University.
