European Torch - symbolic student handover of the EU Presidency to Sweden

On a very important day for Sweden, the Feast of Saint Lucy on 13th of December 2022, a symbolic handover of the European Torch took place to mark the start of the Presidency Council of the European Union by the Kingdom of Sweden. In addition to the students and their teachers, the councilors and the Consul of the Stockholm Office attended the ceremony at Uppsala City Hall.

The international project Flambeau European (European Torch) was set up at the Paul Langevin Secondary Vocational School in Beaucaire, France, with the support of the Occitanie region, the Beaucaire d'Argence commune and the Rector's Office of the Montpellier Academy. The French students and their teachers brought the torch, which they made themselves, and which symbolizes the heart of Europe in the palms of people's hands standing on the fundamental rights declared in the Nice Treaty, to the Secondary School for EU Administration in Horní Počernice in the summer of 2022, on bicycles.

The students want to use this route to promote European values and spread the idea of a united Europe, which takes on a new dimension in the current crisis and aggression in Ukraine. Last, but not least, the young people are trying to highlight the need to protect the environment through an action with the smallest possible carbon footprint.

The vocational secondary school with a focus on EU administration (which has, among other things, a memorandum of cooperation with the MFA and a placement agreement with the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs) promised the previous French school to continue the idea of sustainable travel and the students travelled to Sweden by a combination of train and bus.

The schedule at the town hall was a combination of short speeches and musical performances by the students. The festive morning started with the European anthem performed by students from Lundellsk skolan in Uppsala, followed by a welcome by its director Stefan Nyhem and a speech by the consul mentioning the European legacy of Václav Havel, the need for hope and light, represented by the feast of St Lucy. Petra Bílá, deputy headmistress, and students spoke on behalf of the Czech school, and Mayor Erik Pelling spoke on behalf of the Uppsala council.

The European Torch will be handed over to the school in Spain after six months of the Swedish Presidency.
