30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in Örebro

Ambassador Jiří Šitler addressed hundreds of citizens participating at the opening of the OpenART biennale at Järntorget square in Örebro on June 8, speaking about the 30th anniversary of the  fall of the Iron Curtain and about the role of artists in the Czechoslovak  Velvet Revolution.

OpenART is the biggest event focusing on contemporary art in public space in the Nordic region. One of the most eye-catching exhibited art objects is the new version of David Černý´s iconic Pink Tank exhibited under the title Democracy in Action/Pink Tank Re:visited. The Russian fighting vehicle painted pink and aiming at the City Hall commemorates the Velvet Revolution´s anniversary but also points out the dangers democracy is facing today. David Černý remarked on this occasion: "I thought that the red menace disappeared with the withdrawal of Russian tanks from Central and Eastern Europe. But, apparently, dictatorship still poses a threat, as evidenced by Russian disinformantion campaigns in Europe and the United States, and also by - regrettably, often successful - attempts to gain influence. Democracy cannot be taken for granted, we need to nurture it. I am happy that my Pink Tank can be part of a discussion on this threat during the OpenART biennale at Örebro, that it can participate in Sweden’s drive for democracy“. Later on the same day, joint vernissage of exhibitions by Jiří Jírů (photographs documenting the life and legacy of Václav Havel) and Lucie Frýdlová (prints and sculptures depicting her view of the past 30 years) took place at the Konstfrämjandet Bergslagen gallery. The vernissage was attended by the region´s governor Maria Larsson, by the chairwoman of the City assembly Agneta Blom, by mayor Kenneth Nilsson, and by dozens of other representatives of the political and cultural scene of the city and the region. The events were organized by OpenART, curators from Gila Base, Konstfrämjandet Bergslagen gallery in cooperation with the Czech Embassy and the Czech Centre Stockholm and supported by Kommuninvest. The Pink Tank Re:visited will be exhibited until September 1 and the exhibitions can be visited until the end of June.
