Sculpture by the Sea

This year, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Velvet revolution, there will be a special showcase of Czech and Slovak sculptors presented. The artists presenting their work at this year´s special exhibition within the Sculpture by the Sea are Václav Fiala (Jan Palach), Lukáš Rittstein & Barbora Šlapetová (Birds of Paradise), Krištof Kintera (Lay Down and Shine), Jakub Geltner (Crowded Nest), David Černý (Pink tank), Jana Bačová Kroftová (Golden Age) a Monika Horčicová (Tripod).

The idea of an outdoor exhibition of sculptures was born in former Czechoslovakia where David Handley, the founder of Sculpture by the Sea lived during the early 90s. Inspired by the rich outdoor decoration of many of the Czech castles and chateaux David Handley organised the first exhibition of sculptures and paintings in 1996. Due to specific outdoor space that is significantly influenced by the weather the exhibition focused on sculptures in years to follow. During its history of 23 years, the project became a world known prestigious event that is already a traditional event of the Australian cultural life.

More than 100 artworks can be seen on the iconic Coastal Walk between Bondi beach and Tamarama beach in Sydney. Other part of the exhibition will be presented in spring 2020 in Perth, Western Australia. There was one Sculpture by the Sea outside Australia, in 2009 in Denmark.

During the exhibition, a traditional conference Sydney Sculpture Conference https://sculpturebythesea.com/bondi/sydney-sculpture-conference-2019/ and a number of educational programmes focused on all age categories (https://sculpturebythesea.com/bondi/education/program-information/) will take place, with other programmes, attended by the participating artists as well.
