Central European Business Forum in Melbourne

The Central Europian business forum in Melbourne took place on 24.08.2016 within the traditional Small Business Victoria Festival under the patronage of the government of the Australian state of Victoria. In addition to the countries of V4 (Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland) other central European countries Slovenia and Romania also participated. The Business forum was organised by the Consulate General of Hungary in Melbourne in cooperation with the Swinburne University of Technology.
 

„Small Business Victoria Festival“ is held traditionally in August  and is always a good opportunity for  small to medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) to familiarise themselves with new possibilities in business. They can have reciprocal exchange of experiences, gain valuable contacts to help their company to greater productivity and competitiveness. There are 450 different events being held within the Festival, includng lectures, seminars, forums, networking or workshops.

The Consulate General of Hungary in Melbourne took the opportunity to organise this Forum where more than 100 people from small and medium sized companies from Victoria had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the  Central European markets.

Opening remarks were made by the Consul General of Hungary in Melbourne Mr. Péter Bakonyi and Mr. Kevin Magee from Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade who presented  all attendees with the history of mutual political and business contacts between Australia and other countries of Cental Europe. Mrs. Justine Morris and Mrs. Jane Ward from the Swinburn University in Melbourne also informed everybody about programs within international student mobility in Victoria and the prospects of further cooperation in education, science and research. Mr. Phil Bourke from the Australian Trade Commision (Austrade) talked about projects, which the agency is preparing for its clients among SME in Central Europe, where Austrade has offices in Prague and Warsaw.

The Central European Countries representatives had the opportunity to introduce both the current economic situation and industries of the individual countries as well as promising fields and potential for possible Australian investment in given territory. The Central Europe could offer the investment´s opportunities in manufacturing, automotive industry, agriculture, health, energy, ICT or tourism and education. The Czech Republic was represented by the Deputy Consul General Mrs. Michaela Jeřábková from the Consulate General in Sydney. The panel discussion was moderated by Prof. Bruce Wilson from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). The representatives of SMEs from Melbourne and Victoria also had the opportunity to meet with field specialists from Central European Countries within the B2B meeting, where the Czech Republic was represented by a member of the Czech-Australian Business Chamber, Mr. James Oczko.
