Amendment of travel medical insurance for long-term stays

Effective from August 2, 2021, the travel medical insurance of all foreign nationals staying in the Czech Republic for more than 90 days shall be comprehensive (complex) and provided only by Pojišťovna VZP, a.s.

1) If the application for a long-term visa/ residence permit was submitted by or on August 1, 2021:

  • To collect your visa, your medical insurance may cover only the necessary and urgent care. Kindly note however that in this case, you must obtain a comprehensive medical insurance with Pojišťovna VZP, a.s. within 90 days upon entering the Czech Republic (it can also be contracted online).

2) If the application for a long-term visa/ residence permit was submitted on or after August 2, 2021:

  • To collect your visa, your medical insurance may either cover:
  • - the necessary and urgent care for the first 90 days of stay and comprehensive care (contracted with Pojišťovna VZP, a.s.) for the remaining period of stay, or
  • - the comprehensive health care for the entire period of stay (contracted with Pojišťovna VZP, a.s.). If your comprehensive medical insurance for the entire period of stay was contracted on or before August 1, 2021, it may be contracted with an insurance company other than Pojišťovna VZP, a.s.

This duty does not apply to foreign nationals participating in the public health insurance (for example when employed, proof of medical travel insurance is required only for the period of entry until the beginning of employment), whose medical costs will be covered on the basis of an international agreement,or who hold a valid EHIC and GHIC health insurance card. Also, this obligation does not apply to EU citizens and their close family members.
